Almeria: Courgette and cucumber prices rising

Spain: Warm autumn affecting prices at start of vegetable campaign

Almeria's vegetable campaign is only just starting and it will still take a few weeks before going into full swing. "What is not as normal are the current temperatures, still well above average, which has led to an increase in volume and, consequently, to a more complicated start in terms of prices," explains Juan E. Cano Díaz, Commercial Director of the company AgrupaEjido.

Until only a week ago, prices were considerably lower compared to the same period last year, with just 0.15 to 0.20 Euro per kilo for cucumbers of the Almeria variety, for example.

The situation has now drastically changed for courgettes, whose price has been skyrocketing for the past ten days, reaching an average of 1.10 Euro per kilo. In the case of the above-mentioned Almeria cucumber, prices are now reaching 0.50 to 0.60 Euro per kilo.

Meanwhile, aubergines, which are the most sensitive to the weather, are raising the most concern this campaign, with prices at barely 0.30 Euro per kilo, while the striped variety stands at around 0.50 Euro per kilo.

"These are still early days and, for now, the weather is not favourable, but there is no reason not to be optimistic. We have done our part to maintain the quality and we believe it will be achieved during the entire campaign," affirms Juan E. Cano. "We just need to wait and see how the markets will behave and how we will compete with the production of other countries, like Israel or Turkey."

The main markets for AgrupaEjido, which markets its products under the brands Leal, Almery, Perfect Choice and Pandal, will continue to be Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and France, without ignoring the notorious growth in demand from the countries in Eastern Europe.

Popularity of organic vegetables.
In February last year, AgrupaEjido started producing and marketing organic products under the Allsun brand, especially courgettes and cucumbers, with more than satisfactory results. "The projection is truly positive, as we have been unable to meet all demand; consequently, we will continue to increase our production volumes little by little and with caution, as we wish to continue growing without neglecting the quality of these products."
