US: Photo report PMA New Orleans

PMA Fresh Summit was back in New Orleans this year, the first time since 2002. Many participants were very excited about visiting the city, but beyond that the biggest trade show in North America took place last weekend.

This year there was a good registration of participants, not as many as in California, but that’s normal, says Nancy Tucker from the PMA. “We don't have as many as participants this year, but more buyers. Also a small increase of exhibitors.” There were even international buyers from China, South Africa, Australia and other countries. “We need to make sure we help our exhibitors in growing their sales."

By final count, more than 18,000 members of the global fresh produce and floral industry’s supply chain convened for innovation-focused general sessions, 14 educational workshops and two days of expo. Attendees hailed from more than 60 countries and included more than 3,000 buyers.

Exhibitors were overall very pleased. Saturday was a very busy day, Sunday was slower. Due to the very long hall, many exhibitors had a spot at the aisle, where the crowds passed. According to Nancy Tucker there were more than 18,000 participants but there are no final figures yet.
With regards to novelties, there was a big focus on packaging. How to make it more convenient for customers, how to make it more environmentally friendly and how to get children to eat more fruit and vegetables were questions which were answered at the Floor.

Four exhibitors were chosen by an anonymous panel of industry experts to be “best of show,” a contest designed to generate attendee excitement and encourage exhibitors to enhance the effectiveness of their exhibition experience:

  • Best of Show, in-line booth: Sun-Maid Growers of California;
  • Best of Show, island booth: Amerlux Lighting;
  • Best New Product Launch: Sambazon;
  • Best First-Time Exhibitor: It’sFresh!

Next year’s Fresh Summit Convention and Expo will be held Oct.17-19, 2014, in Anaheim, Calif. For more information, visit

PMA is always looking at how to improve, that’s why they have an exhibitor advisory committee. “They share their thoughts and experiences with us on how we can improve. And they have a very strong voice,” Nancy laughs.
