Spain expects to produce 1,600 million kilos of tomatoes
Regarding the 2012/2013 tomato campaign, FEPEX highlighted that both production volumes and cultivated acreage are at last year's levels. For the season starting just now, the acreage is expected to remain stable, with a production estimated at around 1,600 million kilos over the October-May period from a total of 16,000 hectares.
The representatives of the Association of Tomato and Cucumber Producer Organisations from France, "AOPn Tomato", stressed that during the campaign's first semester there was a 15% drop in production as a result of adverse weather conditions, which was recovered over the past quarter, resulting in the campaign finishing at similar levels to last year. For the 2013/2014 season, a slight increase in production is expected.
Italy, for its part, emphasised that during the 2012/2013 campaign, production volumes dropped by 15% compared to the previous season.
