Quality checks and fraud prevention

Italy: More checks for PGI Pachino tomato companies

More checks carried out by an inspector for the PGI territory and more precise info regarding authorised packaging centres: these are the two very important measures implemented by the PGI Pachino Tomato Consortium on the 24th of September.

The meeting with I.Z.S., the control body appointed by MIPAAF, was useful in making an assessment on the situation as regards the checks on companies registered with the association. In particular, it was decided to appoint a territorial inspector to carry out checks in those companies that indicate the amount of PGI produce produced daily and also in those that do not.

In addition, a list was made with the certified packaging centres which, as is known, must be located within a delimited district and to which the companies supplying packaging materials shall deliver the material with the PGI mark.

"The control and monitoring of the market, especially as regards quality and fraud controls, were among the points I had listed as having priority in the document handed to the Managing Board of the consortium, and I am happy to say that important measures have been implemented. We will also carry out further checks as the safeguard of the product and the fight against fraud are among the key actions of the Consortium," explains Chairman Sebastiano Fortunato.

The actions that were arranged are articulated and could lead to further developments: "The I.Z.S. has undertaken to carry out surprise checks which will be integrated by the inspector we requested to the Mipaad," adds Salvatore Chiaramida, Director of the Consortium.
