Spain: First California peppers make more then 1 € / kg at Almeria auctions

The 2013/2014 fruit and vegetable season in Almeria has begun in several areas of the province, especially with the early peppers. The initial price of the yellow California Amarillo pepper is more than 1 euro per kilo.

Although the harvest is in an early stage, the yellow California peppers will be on shelves soon. The prices are favourable for producers. The yellow California is of good quality and there is not much volume available, but the price is affordable. This could still amount to 1.30 euros per kilo in some situations. Also the red California leads to contentment among producers, although the price is slightly lower, around 80 cents per kilo. The Green California fetches between 50 and 60 cents per kilo.

Other products, such as zucchini, eggplant, cucumber and tomato, mainly show a price reduction. The zucchini will cost around 30 cents per kilo, the eggplant is just over 40 cents per kilo. The cucumber, both the French and the Spanish ones, are around 30 to 33 cents per kilo; tomato variety Daniela is around 40 cents per kilo, the pear-shaped tomato around 25 cents per kilo and tomatoes on the vine are just above 20 cents per kilo.
