"We only have one world. We should be mindful of that"

"Weonly have one world" is the motto of the pepper growers at Nursery de Westerschelde in the Ductch town of Westdorpe. Grower Johan Reedijk talks about the importance of sustainability.

Nursery DeWesterschelde is a young company that has specialized in the cultivation of redpeppers. These are grown in a very sustainable way in an ultramodern nursery. For the heat and CO2 supply a collaboration was made with the localindustry. Where previously the released heat and CO2 was blown in the air andcooled in the nearby waterways, this 'waste' is now used to produce food in a sustainablemanner. This way a perfect synergy was found with the existing industry.

Not onlythe energy supply and CO2 are durable, the company recycles Rockwool andcaptures all the excess water, which is disinfected and reused. The experienceof entrepreneurs in the Westerschelde, allows them to battle plagues affectingpepper cultivation without the use of chemical crop protection.
