The tomato from Extremadura is increasingly sold in Italy and Germany, thanks to a Chinese government measure to decrease tomato production by 50% because of increasing production costs. China was the main competitor. This of course opens new possibilities for Extremadura.
Domingo Fernández, president of the cooperative of Extremadura (Acopaex), announces that there is a sharp increase in the market for tomatoes to these countries. The floods in the Spring, however, have again led to some production delays, says Fernández.
This season, the harvest will be lower than in 2012, although the quality is optimal this year, according to a survey of Acopaex.
Despite the delay there is sufficient capacity to cope with demand. Production can also meet the demand of the processing industry, says Domingo Fernández.
