Spain: Record production volumes of Almeria zucchini

The province of Almeria has achieved a record production of courgettes this year. Thanks to the greenhouses, a total of 371.29 million kg was produced, against 350.60 million kg the previous year, according to figures from the regional Department of Agriculture in Andalusia.

The zucchini are grown on 6,358 hectares, 11.56% more than in the previous season, when 5,699 hectares were devoted to this vegetable. This season the yield was 5.84 kg per square meter, compared to 6.15 kilo per square meter in the 2011/2012 season, 5.75 kilograms per square meter in 2010/2011 and 5.39 kilograms per square meter in 2009/2010.

Official figures from the regional Ministry of Agriculture of Andalusia show that the first months of the season went well, with a gradual growth in production. Pricing was more favourable than in previous seasons.

In the Winter, prices were highest, with a maximum price in February (€ 1.27 / kg).

The temperature rise and the supply from other production led to a production explosion in the spring, resulting in a decline in April and May, after which prices stabilized.
