Belgium: Unprecedented demand for CHP

This year the demand in Belgium horticulture for CHP installations is higher than ever before. The first nine months alone have seen 34 requests for biogas installations, 4 for biomass installations, 20 for windmills, 1 hydroelectric power plant and no less than 149 CHP installations. Last year this last number was 82. The numbers are high: the demand for CHP in particular is massive. CHP is fast gaining ground in the horticultural sector. But windmills and biogas are popular as well. 208 dossiers have been listed by the Flemish Regulator for Electricity and Gas Market (VREG).

“This proves that the policy concerning green energy works,” says member of parliament Robrecht Bothuyne, looking at numbers provided by minister of energy Freya van den Bossche. The shift from solar panels to larger energy-sufficient technologies was one of the key notes in the minister’s policy.
