Ball State University's renowned phalaenopsis collection will have to wait a while longer to have a new home to call its own. The university has tabled efforts to build a new greenhouse for its Wheeler Orchid Collection and Species Bank after bids for the project came in higher than anticipated. Construction had been scheduled to begin in September, followed by a grand opening in the spring. But bids exceeded the $770,000 budget, and the university has decided not to accept any of them.
Spokeswoman Joan Todd tells The Star Press the university is looking at ways to reduce the cost of the project and seeking additional private funding. The orchid collection is designed to conserve rare and endangered species of phalaenopsis and use them for research and education.
