Netherlands: Lauran Geurts happy with Cumulus

Dutch grower of asparagus Lauran Geurts announced he will continue cultivating the Cumulus variety. In 2009 he planted a few hectares, and once more in 2012. Now, he is convinced that Cumulus is the way to go. “I had a lot of issues with the former variety,” he explains. “With Cumulus, I haven’t experienced any browning for three years. This is very important for swift processing."

Geurts’ intention is clear: “I want a nice early asparagus of top quality. I actually prefer a smaller harvest with top notch products over a larger harvest with slightly inferior crops.” Initially Geurts experimented with small tunnels covering the foil. The first year already yielded a 5500-kg harvest per hectare.

As chairman of the asparagus committee at ZON Auction, Geurts is closely involved in marketing the produce: “Quality is getting increasingly important. People pay good money for a good asparagus, leading me to go with Cumulus again this year.”
