Silicon-based biostimulant receives EU certification for pan-European rollout

Biostimulant innovation in the EU is taking on an increasingly strategic role, particularly following the entry into force of a Community regulatory framework that demands greater scientific rigor and clarity in communicating agronomic effects. Against that backdrop, Labin chose the recent edition of Macfrut as the stage to unveil its latest development: LabiSinergic.

The biostimulant is now being relaunched under a new technical and regulatory identity after receiving certification as a biostimulant in compliance with European Union regulations, which allows it to be positioned consistently across the entire EU market, explains Janna González, the company's representative.

"At Macfrut we gave an exclusive preview of the product, and the official launch of this EU-recognized biostimulant will take place in early May," she says. "LabiSinergic is based on orthosilicic acid, developed through our Smart Tech technology to activate and reinforce crops' natural resistance mechanisms against the main stress factors that limit production and quality."

"The market contains many silicon-based formulations whose efficacy depends largely on their chemical form and their ability to be absorbed and translocated by the plant. Orthosilicic acid introduces a meaningful differentiation in terms of agronomic performance, working in a far more precise way."

How does orthosilicic acid work?
The LabiSinergic orthosilicic acid formulation makes silicon available to plants in a bioavailable form that strengthens their structure: silicon is incorporated into cell walls, increasing mechanical resistance and elasticity, thereby creating a physical barrier against external stressors.

"This translates into thickening of the cuticle, which in turn means greater resistance to water stress, one of the most significant limiting factors in current agricultural productivity, especially in Mediterranean regions." The effect is not confined to the vegetative cycle, however, since the structural reinforcement also has implications at the post-harvest stage, where fruit firmness and shelf life play a decisive role in logistics and marketing. "By strengthening the structure of the fruit, we are not only helping the plant in the field, we are also ensuring the product holds up much better all the way to the supermarket shelf," she adds.

Nutritional synergies and cross-crop application
Another aspect that strengthens the product's positioning is its interaction with other nutritional elements, particularly calcium, whose mobility within the plant, especially under stress conditions, is key to final fruit quality. "LabiSinergic enables the plant to translocate nutrients very effectively, promoting a more efficient and stable nutritional balance; these nutritional synergies and cross-crop applicability highlight the product's potential," she notes.

"Its ability to integrate into broader nutritional strategies, combined with its validation across different crop types, from vegetables to woody crops, allows LabiSinergic to be positioned as a versatile tool within crop management programmes, especially on operations looking to improve resilience, quality, and efficiency simultaneously."

A market in transformation
The launch of solutions of this kind comes at a time when the European biostimulant market is evolving rapidly, driven both by regulatory pressure and by growers' need to adopt technologies that allow them to remain competitive under increasingly complex conditions.

"For that reason, certification as a biostimulant acts not only as a guarantee of regulatory compliance, but also as a differentiating factor in a market where transparency and technical evidence are becoming decisive."
