NL: Strawberry grower expands with acquisition of pepper greenhouse

Cox Vastgoed B.V. will acquire a 5.2-hectare protected horticulture site in Sevenum, in the Dutch province of Limburg, from pepper grower Frank Bakker, effective 1 December 2026. The acquisition is part of a broader growth strategy by Cox Aardbeien, a strawberry producer based in the Netherlands.

Earlier in 2026, Cox Aardbeien established a collaboration with P. van Osch Groenteproducties for the propagation of 1.5 million tray plants of the licensed variety Inspire. The company's existing 3-hectare propagation nursery, where vegetable plants are sown and raised, aligns closely with the production schedule for strawberry tray plant propagation. This capacity allows Cox Aardbeien to remain self-sufficient in plant supply.

Cox Aardbeien currently produces strawberries at locations in Baarlo and at its home base in Horst. With the addition of the Sevenum site, the company's total cultivation area will grow to 21 hectares under glass, of which 17 hectares will be dedicated to strawberry production. "This strengthens our position as a decisive and future-proof horticultural business," the company stated in a press release (link in Dutch).

The newly acquired greenhouses will be fitted with a proprietary in-line growing system in early 2027. LED assimilation lighting will also be installed, bringing the total illuminated area to 10.5 hectares. The company expects these investments to contribute to higher, more consistent yields and reduced labour costs.

The first strawberries from the new Sevenum location, on Zeesweg, are expected to be delivered in early May 2027.
