A large garden in Unsan-myeon, Seosan-si, appears if you drive for about 10 minutes after leaving Seosan IC on the West Coast Expressway by car. In the middle of the rice farming area, a quite large vinyl greenhouse boasts great power. Inside the 21,450㎡ (about 6,500 pyeong) greenhouse with a floor area of 27,720㎡ (about 8,400 pyeong), there is a facility to grow various varieties of strawberries. It is a state-of-the-art greenhouse completed last spring.
However, the atmosphere was quite different from other strawberry cultivation greenhouses. If it's an ordinary strawberry greenhouse, you'll be busy harvesting ripe strawberries now, but almost all the beds are cleanly empty here. Only some beds that have not yet been cleared have traces of strawberries growing. Strawberries usually disappear in winter and late spring, but what on earth is going on in this greenhouse.
This farm was not a place to grow winter strawberries like ordinary farms, but a place specialized as a place to grow summer strawberries. Strawberries are low-temperature crops, so they are typically planted in greenhouses in September, or seedlings, and then production begins in early December and is harvested by the end of April. This is why strawberry season is winter in Korea. However, it aims to start harvesting at the end of June and produce it by December after formalizing it in the middle of next month.
