Cucumber cultivation in Rajasthan's scorching climate proves hydroponics delivers, say Rajat Agarwal and Pawan Agarwal, owners of Rajasthan Greens in Kota. Agronomists Uttam Powar and Rahul Raj oversee operations across six acres of naturally ventilated polyhouses with insect-proof netting. They use coco peat slabs and precision drip fertigation for soilless production. "We're now in peak flowering and fruiting across all bays. Parthenocarpic hybrid varieties handle the protected setup through two major cycles yearly, August-January and January-May, extending as climate allows," Rajat mentions.

Pawan highlights how Rajasthan's temperature extremes demand sharp management, especially as summer highs hover over 45°C. "Root-zone overheating, transpiration stress, nutrient imbalances, flower drop, and EC spikes from evaporation hit hard. We use natural side and top ventilation, 50% shade nets in peak heat, and frequent controlled irrigation to cool roots. EC and pH stay crop-stage specific through daily checks. Substrate-based hydroponics with coco peat slabs works best here as it buffers EC swings, keeps roots oxygenated, and shields from thermal shock," he explains.

The focus stays on root-zone health above all. Precise EC/pH monitoring, balanced fertigation, substrate tweaks for heat tolerance, and strict root pathogen prevention ensure stable canopies and yields, Rajat states while adding, "Healthy roots mean consistent fruit size, shine, and output no matter the outside temperature. For now, our crops reach mandis and supermarkets domestically, with plans to expand protected areas and venture into colored bell peppers and specialty crops."
For newcomers growing cucumbers through protected cultivation in Rajasthan, Pawan shares some advice: "Prioritize roots over canopy, monitor EC daily in summer, avoid over-irrigation, use shade smartly, and keep hygiene tight against nematodes."
