US: Tomato grower advances early-season greenhouse production for 2026

Wishwell Farms has initiated its 2026 tomato production cycle with seedling propagation beginning in late January. Transplants are established in five controlled-environment greenhouses, utilizing rockwool as a soilless substrate to optimize root development, nutrient uptake, and uniform crop performance. Select plants are transitioned to open-field production to extend harvest duration and maintain seasonal supply continuity.

The operation projects approximately 2,500 tomato plants for the season, with an estimated yield of 20 pounds per plant, totaling roughly 50,000 pounds of marketable fruit. Early greenhouse establishment enables vine-ripened harvests several weeks ahead of traditional field-grown crops, strengthening early market positioning and revenue potential.

A structured integrated pest management (IPM) program underpins production, incorporating daily scouting, biological controls, sanitation protocols, and targeted treatments. This systems-based approach mitigates pest pressure while maintaining plant health, consistent yields, and high-quality fruit standards.

Market distribution is concentrated through regional farmers' markets, with peak demand aligned around Memorial Day. In addition to tomatoes, the farm's diversified crop portfolio includes peppers, cucurbits, sweet corn, onions, melons, and green beans, enhancing operational resilience and seasonal market competitiveness.
