Saxony-Anhalt:

Environmentally friendly cucumber production in a high-tech greenhouse

New cucumber plants have recently been moved into the high-tech greenhouse in Osterweddingen owned by Bördegarten, a subsidiary of the Wimex Group. With the start of the cucumber season, Bördegarten will be supplying food retailers with cucumbers from regional, environmentally friendly production on a continuous basis from March onwards. "Our aim is to reliably supply our customers with consistently high-quality goods – even in the sensitive fresh produce sector," says Ulrich Wagner, Managing Director of the Wimex Group.

The vegetable producer's modern greenhouse on the outskirts of Magdeburg offers optimal conditions for growing cucumbers and is designed for resource-efficient production. Thanks to the precise and fully automatic control of temperature, water and fresh air supply, sustainable irrigation with rainwater, and the controlled release of plant nutrients, chemical plant protection measures can be largely dispensed with. Bördegarten relies on beneficial insects such as ladybirds to combat harmful insects. The result is high-quality, environmentally friendly cucumbers for the retail trade. In addition to cucumbers, organic herbs also thrive under these conditions in Osterweddingen.

Comprehensive understanding of sustainability
In addition to protected cultivation in greenhouses, outdoor cultivation in the Magdeburg Börde region is Bördegarten's strongest pillar. Around 20 varieties of field vegetables come from its own production. The combination of open-field and greenhouse production enables Bördegarten to compensate for seasonal fluctuations and offer retailers a stable, broad range of products. The entire production process is embedded in the Wimex Group's comprehensive understanding of sustainability, which combines regional production with coordinated production and logistics processes and focuses on long-term partnerships.

"For our customers in the food retail sector, traceable origin, reliable availability of quantities, and a responsible production concept are key decision-making criteria," says Ulrich Wagner. "This is precisely what we focus our production and processes on, both outdoors and under glass." With high delivery capacity, well-established logistics structures, and a clear understanding of quality, Bördegarten is a strong partner to food retailers in central and northern Germany.
