Growing grass for cows in a vertical farm

In the Netherlands, dairy farmer Wouter Slob of Kaas van Boer Slob in Giessenburg is exploring the possibility of feeding his cows fresh spring grass year-round by growing grass in a vertical farm. After winning the Dutch Dairy Challenge with this concept, he received a voucher from Fieldlab Vertical Farming to further develop and assess the business case together with Fieldlab partners Logiqs and Delphy. It was shared on social media that grass is now being cultivated in a vertical farming system as part of the project.

At the Delphy Improvement Centre in Bleiswijk, researchers are investigating the optimal cultivation parameters for growing grass in a controlled vertical farming environment. Trials focus on light recipes, plant densities and substrates. The aim is to determine how to produce high-quality grass consistently, independent of seasonal changes and weather conditions.

The project is carried out within Fieldlab Vertical Farming and is supported by contributions from the European Union and the Province of South Holland.
