Semillas Fitó's spring cucumbers are more productive, stronger, and easier to handle

Semillas Fitó remains dedicated to genetic innovation and creating varieties tailored to actual farming needs. Its Dutch spring cucumber range, including Nairobi and Mitre, exemplifies this by balancing fruit quality, resistance, plant health, and ease of handling.

"Our goal remains consistent: to offer growers solutions that lower virus and pest pressures and support profitable, stable, high-quality production. We achieve this through continuous development, incorporating new resistances, agronomic improvements, and, most importantly, listening to the sector," stated Alberto Lasheras, Crop Advisor for cucumber and courgette at Semillas Fitó.

One of the key features of this range is the inclusion of SmartQ technology, developed by Semillas Fitó, which enhances the plants' ability to tolerate stress and promotes healthier, more uniform growth throughout the cycle, even under extreme weather conditions.

"SmartQ is not a visual concept; it is a structural enhancement that increases resistance and improves overall plant behavior. It's a genetic development that becomes evident in field performance," Lasheras stated.

Each variety in the spring range responds to specific growing conditions.

Nairobi: The newest variety, perfect for short cycles. This open, airy plant features SmartQ genetics and has quadruple resistance to CVYV, CVDV, powdery mildew, and CGMMV. Known for its high fruit quality and health benefits, it is well-suited for transplanting from February to April and August to September.

Mitre: A classic variety ideally suited for cultivation in hot conditions, demonstrating excellent adaptability during summer. Its high productivity and consistent performance also make it a reliable option for summer transplanting.

© Semillas Fitó S.A.U.Caudal: Recommended for spring, summer, and fall, it produces high-quality fruit with a well-defined spine and pistillate closure. The standout feature of Caudal is its resistance to CGMMV, a rare trait in this segment.

Normando: This variety has become the leading choice in the early segment in Almeria and along the Granada coast, meeting all commercial needs with its dark-green, spiny fruit and small pistil closure. It has demonstrated the effectiveness of its resistance package against powdery mildew, yellowing, yellow veins, and CGMMV over the past five seasons.

Stability and yield are essential for the crop's profitability. According to Lasheras, "Fitó's varieties adapt very well to different areas and times, which means that production can be maintained with good results even in unfavorable weather conditions." Additionally, all varieties meet market requirements: dark-green skin, good texture, good flavor, and excellent post-harvest qualities.

Thanks to their improved plant health, these varieties also reduce the need for treatments, supporting more sustainable farming practices and lowering costs for growers.
