Students in Aurora are now gaining access to science-driven agriculture as the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) turned over smart greenhouse facilities to two public high schools to support food security learning. The greenhouses were established at Casiguran National High School and Maria Aurora National High School, which will serve as central seedling production hubs supplying high-quality planting materials to 20 other beneficiary schools across the province.
DOST Aurora Project Technical Assistant Leanne Marphy Custodio said the technology-enabled facilities allow year-round, climate-resilient seedling production and give students hands-on experience in plant biology, environmental control, and sustainable agriculture.
"Through hands-on use of the greenhouses, students gain practical science- and technology-based skills. They learn how to monitor temperature and humidity, manage water and nutrients efficiently, use basic IoT systems for greenhouse monitoring, and apply principles of sustainable and climate-smart agriculture," Custodio added.
Each greenhouse measures six meters by ten meters and features UV-protected film, retractable shade nets, sanitation areas, automated climate and water systems, and multi-level racks supporting hundreds of seedling trays for learning.
