Hydrangea greenhouse converted for seed production and asparagus propagationion

Bejo is expanding its greenhouse area in the Netherlands in response to increasing demand for seed production. In Velden, in the province of Limburg, the company has acquired a greenhouse complex previously operated by a hydrangea grower. The greenhouse was purchased from Queens Flower, with ownership transferred earlier in the year.

The acquisition adds 52,500 square metres of greenhouse space to Bejo's facilities. "This expansion is an important step in meeting the growing demand for seed production," a company spokesperson said. "At the same time, it creates additional capacity for asparagus propagation."

The conversion of the former hydrangea nursery will begin soon. "We are investing approximately one million euros in adapting the energy and water installations, so we can actively contribute to a sustainable food chain."

The greenhouse will be divided into insect-proof compartments. These will be used for the production of vegetable seeds, specifically parent lines for hybrid varieties. The seeds produced in Velden are subsequently cultivated year-round in different climate zones worldwide. Space will also be allocated for the propagation of parent lines used in asparagus seed production.

Bejo expects to start asparagus propagation in the spring, with the greenhouse becoming fully operational for seed production later in the year.

AAB acted as broker on behalf of the selling party, Queens Flower.
