Harrold Thijssen from Rheinlandhof:

"The solution is our new greenhouse with innovative cultivation technology"

Drought and severe weather have been causing problems for German vegetable farmers for years. At Rheinlandhof in Willich in the Lower Rhine region, they have found a way to combat climate change in lettuce production. "In times of climate change, it is becoming increasingly difficult for us producers in particular to grow high-quality vegetables efficiently and without consuming large amounts of resources. Because, of course, we would rather not use more water than necessary," explains Harrold Thijssen, adding, "This is now difficult to achieve in outdoor cultivation under these weather conditions. The solution is our new greenhouse with innovative cultivation technology that has hardly been used in Europe to date."

The figures are impressive: the modern hydro greenhouse saves 90 percent of water compared to field cultivation, requires 75 percent less fertilizer, and also yields significantly higher yields. Rhineland Farm is also considered a welcome addition to the portfolio of food retail partner Kaufland. "Whether it's climate change, water scarcity, or the energy transition—agriculture, and vegetable cultivation in particular, are facing challenging times. For us as a company, it is important in terms of sustainability to offer regional products that can be grown in Germany all year round in the most resource-efficient way possible," says Stefan Lukes, Managing Director of Fresh Produce Purchasing at Kaufland. The root ball also keeps the lettuce fresh and crisp for longer.
