Finnish growers break own cucumber record

During the latest cultivation cycle, Johan Prinsén and his son Jesper Prinsén reported a cucumber yield of 256 kg per square meter per year at their greenhouse operation, Oy Johan Prinsén Ab, located in Pjelax, Finland. The 2024 production figures had already drawn international attention within the greenhouse cucumber sector due to the high output per square meter. The new data point continues the trend of incremental yield increases through adjustments in cultivation strategy and greenhouse management.

According to the company, the yield level is linked to ongoing work on climate control, crop monitoring, nutrient management, production planning, and the application of current cultivation technologies. The output per square meter illustrates how greenhouse systems are being tuned to increase production efficiency within a controlled environment.

Johan Prinsén has been active in vegetable production for more than 30 years. In addition to his role at the company, he has long served on the board of Närpiön Vihannes Cooperative, where he is one of the producers involved in cooperative-level development activities.

The company is currently managed jointly by Johan Prinsén and his son Jesper Prinsén. Jesper is involved in day-to-day production and crop development, with a focus on implementing and evaluating cultivation techniques within the greenhouse operation.

Commenting on the approach, Jesper Prinsén stated that the company aims to continue working on productivity, crop quality, and production methods through ongoing development and cooperation with sector partners.
