In 2023, the Bayer R&D team formally communicated to the market: "we'll be launching in 2025 at least one Intermediate Resistant product within each of the major glasshouse segment".
That statement now reflects the current momentum within the company, as teams actively prepare products and seeds for the ongoing and upcoming 2025 glasshouse sowing campaigns. In 2025, Bayer has already released several new varieties to the market across the main segments, including large trusses, medium trusses, beef, pink beef, and cherry and cocktail plums, with additional launches expected by the end of summer. This illustrates the current dynamic of the Bayer De Ruiter glasshouse portfolio.
The Bayer De Ruiter teams highlight several reasons for pride. Bayer is delivering its multigene IR ToBRFV resistance through this 2025 wave of new varieties. This resistance has recently been tested with strong results against so-called "resistance breaking" strains reported in Belgium, as referenced in the latest news shared by Bayer.
The path chosen several years ago is now confirmed as the right one. "It was a longer and more difficult route but today we are proudly bringing a durable resistance to growers, especially in the light of the appearance of resistance breaking ToBRFV which breaks monogenic resistance", said Jan Barten, Strategic Project Lead.
Launching new varieties with strong agronomic performance and ToBRFV resistance has been a key objective for Bayer, benefiting growers and the entire value chain. "We have high expectations on both the agronomic performance as well as on the resistance level", said Maxime Coqué, EMEA Tomato Portfolio Lead.
The achievement is shared across the entire team. Jan Barten, who coordinates the ToBRFV resistance effort at Bayer De Ruiter, expressed clear satisfaction when asked about progress, stating without ambiguity: "we'll not stop there, we'll continue!"

Bayer has already taken a strong position against ToBRFV by commercializing De Ruiter glasshouse tomato varieties with resistance, including the red beef Ferreira launched in 2022 and Futumaru, a pink beef tomato launched in 2024.
The year 2025 is set to be pivotal for the De Ruiter glasshouse portfolio worldwide, with confirmed launches across multiple segments. These include large truss varieties GRANDICE RES* (breeder's reference: DRTH1060), REDITY* (DRTH1050), LUMINITY* (DRTH1054), and SERENITY; medium truss varieties MARISARA* (DRTH0068), DEFENSIOSA* (DRTH0072), GUARDIOSA* (DRTH0074), and REZENCE* (DRTH0090); pink beef varieties ROSIMARU MUCHOO, PINKMARU* (DRTG4876), HAKUMARU RES* (DRTG4873), and SHINEMARU* (DRTG4872); cocktail and cherry plum truss varieties; and the beef variety RIBOSKI* (DRTH5066). These products are the result of both converted successful hybrids, such as Grandice, and newly bred materials.
All listed products are now available for sale. In the coming weeks, Bayer Glasshouse teams will confirm the commercial names of products currently under approval and will share the latest performance updates for each segment, based on ongoing work by the launch teams.
