On December 3, an open day was organized by CapGen Seeds in the municipality of Berja, in the province of Almeria, where it officially presented Cancerbero, its new red bell pepper for the early cycle. During the event, the technical team gave a guided tour of the field in which they outlined the variety's handling, positioning and marketing potential.

"Cancerbero is recommended for transplanting from June 25 to July 15 and is a solid and safe option for growers seeking to obtain good yields and, above all, nice sizes in the early cycle," says Joaquín Cañabete, technical and pepper development manager at CapGen Seeds. "The most outstanding aspect of this variety is, without a doubt, its large caliber, which is difficult to obtain in early cycle peppers. Cancerbero reaches sizes GG and above," he says.

"This pepper has a good color, both in red and green, and a nice square shape. It's also not highly susceptible to micro-cracking, and it comes with a good package of resistances to diseases such as powdery mildew, nematodes or L4 Spotted, among others," says Cañabete.
The variety's presentation went very well, according to the technical manager, bearing in mind that many growers have been discouraged by the spread of Thrips parvispinus.

"In general, there is little demand for new pepper varieties in the current climate, as many are hesitant about switching to other crops. That's why we were surprised by the event's success," says Cañabete, who adds that they have been working on new varieties that should help in the fight against this Thrips.

Cancerbero is part of the new line of peppers that is the result of research work carried out over the last few years, and which also includes the medium cycle variety Arquero - which will be presented next week - as well as the Vigía and Vigilante for late cycles, which they hope to present next month.
