After 30 years of growing peppers, De Kruidenaer is shifting its full attention to producing even more high-quality herbs. One of their pepper greenhouses is currently being converted for this purpose.
Since the pepper plants were cleared out in October, the transformation of a total of 5 hectares of greenhouse has been in full swing. In a short period of time, and with help from several partners as well as their own team, major work is being carried out on heating, irrigation, and soil preparation.
In the renewed greenhouse the herbs will be propagated directly in the soil to extend the outdoor season. To make this possible, the existing heating system must be repositioned higher in the greenhouse, and the drip system is being replaced with overhead sprinklers. The energy screen has also been removed and replaced with a shading cloth, and the CO₂ system is being adjusted to suit the new setup.
The full transition will take several months. The current expectation is that the first mint cuttings can be planted in the updated greenhouse in week 7 of the new year.
