Australia: The reward of helping people with rescued food

"We are reminded every week why rescued food matters," Perfection Fresh Australia shared. The company sees thousands of kilos of fresh produce leave its farms and glasshouses, not for supermarket shelves, but for people facing real hardship. This quiet stream of fresh fruit and vegetables is part of a larger effort to support communities that rely on food relief.

A recent example came after an industry exhibition, when trays of Monterosa Heirloom tomatoes were collected by OzHarvest. The tomatoes were a small but meaningful contribution to a wider story of support and partnership. Perfection Fresh has been a long-time donor to OzHarvest, and in 2025 the company contributed more than 50,235 kilos of fresh produce, averaging 966 kilos each week. Those donations helped deliver more than 100,000 meals to Australians doing it tough.

Behind every rescued tray is a person with a story. One woman, newly arrived in Australia and now visiting an OzHarvest Market, shared her gratitude with the OzHarvest team. She said their kindness filled more than plates. It filled hearts and gave her community a sense of hope and generosity.

OzHarvest sees this impact every day. The organisation distributes rescued food through its markets and supports more than 1,500 charities, schools and community groups across the country. Many of these partners are under increasing pressure as demand rises and new faces turn up seeking help.

The need continues to grow. As highlighted in a recent Perfection Fresh post, Foodbank Australia reported that one in five households earning ninety one thousand dollars or more struggled to afford food this year. Across the past twelve months, 3.5 million households faced food insecurity.

Perfection Fresh feels privileged to contribute to the solution. Each rescued product, including its Monterosa Heirloom tomatoes, is another chance to help nourish communities with dignity, quality and care.
