tomaté! doubles its greenhouse area in Saint-Damase with the acquisition of Excel-Serres

After doubling its area for seven consecutive years, greenhouse company tomaté! recently announced another expansion—this time through the acquisition of Excel-Serres' assets. Founded in 2021 by Judith and Dominic Lussier, tomaté! is based in Saint-Damase, Québec, and specializes in heirloom-type tomato production. Excel-Serres, also located in Saint-Damase, has been a major producer of pink tomatoes in Québec since 2013 and now becomes tomaté!'s second production site.

At its main site, tomaté! grows seven tomato types, affectionately known as their mamas, with distinctive names like Capucine for its golden yellow type, The Chubby for its ribbed beefsteak and The Rebelle for its beefsteak/Italian cross.

"When we thought about the values we wanted to share with consumers, employees, and partners, we chose to focus on quality, authenticity, well-being, enjoyment, and performance. Heirloom-type tomatoes naturally fit into this vision, since each has its own character," explains Judith Lussier, cofounder of tomaté!.

Because the demand for heirloom-type tomato seeds is relatively low in the industry, these varieties often have a narrower resistance package than conventional types. Drawing on experience with both heirloom-type and conventional varieties, Judith notes that heirloom-type tomatoes are as demanding as they are rewarding—but also more delicate.

Thanks to their perseverance, passionate team, and extensive variety trials, tomaté! continues to chart a path toward sustainable growth. The acquisition of Excel-Serres' assets marks a key milestone in that journey.

"Excel-Serres is an important producer of pink tomatoes in Québec, and we intend to carry on that legacy under the tomaté! banner when we harvest the first fruits in January 2026," says Judith.
