Costa's international berry operations have registered patents for five new blueberry varieties in Laos. This marks the first official registration of a new plant variety in the country and was recognised at a Certificate Handover Ceremony at the Ministry of Industry and Commerce on September 9.
The event was attended by Kikeo Singnavong, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, and Manothong Vongxay, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. Certificates of Registration were presented to Costa Berry Laos General Manager Martin Glenister by Xaysomphet Norasingh, Director General of the Department of Intellectual Property.

Xaysomphet stated that the certificates reflect the contributions of researchers, analysts and plant breeders to Laos' socio-economic development. He added, "This registration will enhance production quality, increase income for rights holders, and contribute to national food security."
Costa launched its blueberry farm in Paksong, on the Bolaven Plateau, in March this year. The initial farm is 17 hectares, with expansion to 200 hectares planned over the next five years.
The company operates a blueberry variety improvement program that has been in place for 30 years. Through this program, Costa has developed varieties and agronomic practices suitable for production in both hemispheres and across temperate and sub-tropical climates. These can be grown under protective cover and in substrate systems.
Costa's blueberry varieties are licensed across multiple regions, including North and South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Recognition of these varieties in Laos is expected to encourage further research and breeding work within the country.
Around 35 other officials attended the event, along with Amphon Viphongxay, HR Manager of Costa Berry Laos.
