Scandola Fruits from Verona

Smooth market for blueberries and remontant strawberries

If you want to be recognised as a specialist, you have to reduce your product range and focus on a few products. Scandola Fruits has taken this path, focusing on blueberries and strawberries in order to be a national point of reference.

"We cultivate 25 hectares of blueberries," begins Matteo Scandola, CEO of the company, "which we harvest from June to October. We grow them in pots, employing fertirrigation techniques and protecting them with hail nets. This year, we will produce around 200 tonnes. The market has been going smoothly so far, without any major price fluctuations. Quotations have been slightly better than in 2024, with no particular high peaks. I would say that we have sold in a range between €7.5 and €8.5/kg."

Scandola Fruits' customers are the big retail chains and wholesale markets. "As for supermarkets, we supply not only Italian supermarkets but also some foreign chains, especially in Germany and Austria, with a few customers also in Eastern Europe, Sweden, and Belgium, to name but a few."

"The most popular formats are the 400-gram or 250-gram punnets. The 300-gram pots have also gained popularity this year. On the other hand, smaller formats such as the 125 gram punnet are becoming less used, as the cost of the packaging is too high compared to that of the product."

The company also grows soilless remontant strawberries, which enter production between March and December. "Here too, the market is proceeding in a linear manner. We cultivate 15 hectares and boast extensive experience with this product, spanning over 50 years. The 400-gram single-layer crate is among the most popular."

The nursery business for plant propagation is also growing: the Scandola company collaborates with several breeders worldwide in order to satisfy more and more agronomic and organoleptic requirements for consumers.
