From an empty structure to a fully planted greenhouse in just one week is the kind of transformation that speaks volumes about innovation, teamwork, and vision. Dumitru Mititelu, recently appointed General Manager of ECA Operator Frövi AB, one of Sweden's largest tomato-growing facilities, shares insights about his new role, the rapid setup of a high-tech tomato production cycle, and the evolution of sustainable agriculture in Northern Europe.
"My new role is very exciting. I'm now the general manager at ECA Operator Frövi AB, the largest tomato grower in Sweden. It's an up-and-coming and dynamic project, building sustainable greenhouse solutions for year-round tomato production."

From empty to planted: A swift, strategic crop launch
In a recent social media post, Dumitru gave a behind-the-scenes look at how the team transformed an empty greenhouse into a fully planted tomato crop in just one week.
"We carefully planned every step: choosing varieties suited to our conditions, preparing the climate and nutrient systems, and getting everything operational in a matter of days. This was only possible thanks to the professionalism and dedication of our team. When people work with enthusiasm and know they're doing something meaningful, the results follow. Now we can confidently look forward to a great harvest."

Why tomatoes? Aligning sustainability with market demand
The decision to focus on tomatoes was both practical and purposeful.
"The choice wasn't random," he explains. "Tomatoes are in high demand, incredibly versatile, and align perfectly with our mission to produce local, sustainable food. By growing domestically, we help reduce imports, lower transport emissions, and ensure a steady supply of fresh, high-quality produce."
"For me, this is an opportunity to make a real impact on food systems, both for people and the environment."
Smart greenhouse, smart farming
Technology plays a vital role in the Frövi operation, enabling precise control and resource efficiency.
"We use automated irrigation, nutrient monitoring, and advanced climate control systems," he shares. One of the standout features is how the greenhouse is integrated into its local environment.
"We utilize excess heat from a nearby paper mill, which allows us to maintain optimal growing conditions throughout the year, even in Sweden's harsh winters. It's a great example of circular economy thinking in practice."
Closing the loop: Water efficiency and climate control
Sustainability doesn't stop at energy. "We collect rainwater from the greenhouse roof, filter it, and reuse it for irrigation," he adds. "Combined with our recirculation system, we significantly reduce water consumption. These small changes really add up."
"It's incredibly satisfying to know that our daily work contributes to a more responsible and efficient food system."
Dumitru shares that the Frövi greenhouse is also a chemical-free zone, relying entirely on IPM and biological control methods.
"We've moved completely away from chemical treatments," he says. "Instead, we use beneficial insects, preventive monitoring, and expert guidance to protect our plants naturally."
A team-driven transformation
At every stage of this transition, collaboration has been key.
"Nothing happens without a team," he emphasizes. "Changing a crop cycle requires tight coordination between growers, technicians, and logistics. Everyone plays a role, and when the team clicks, everything flows smoothly."
In his new leadership position, Dumitru is excited by the opportunity to combine strategic thinking with hands-on horticulture.
"As General Manager of the Frövi complex, I oversee operations, production planning, and long-term innovation," he shares. "I love that I get to lead while also staying connected to the practical side of growing. Seeing the real-world results of your decisions is incredibly rewarding."
"I'm grateful to Selected Group, the KUBO Group, and Regeneri Frövi for placing their trust in me and allowing me to work with such a motivated and forward-thinking team."

Goals for the season
With the new crop cycle underway, Dumitru has clear ambitions for the season ahead. "We're focused on increasing yields, optimizing resource use, and expanding our contribution to Sweden's local food supply," he says.
He's also committed to continuous learning and experimenting with new techniques.
"We're trialing production under artificial lighting and in more challenging conditions. It's tough, but fascinating. And it helps us grow alongside our plants."
Advice for fellow growers
For others preparing for new crop cycles or stepping into leadership roles, Dumitru offers grounded, practical advice.
"Preparation, planning, and teamwork are everything," he says. "Understanding both the biology and the technology behind your system is essential."
"Be open to learning. Embrace innovation. Share your knowledge and support each other. And don't be afraid to try new things, and the results will follow."
