Revenue doubled with the expansion of a cucumber-first strategy nationwide

With a national expansion in motion, a CEO transition approaching, and a strong Q2 performance behind it, Swedish agtech company Agtira is sharpening its focus on sustainable, year-round cucumber production, while leaving the door open for future diversification.

At the center of this momentum is a leadership shift: current CEO Erik will pass the reins to Fredrik Forssberg, who will officially take over as CEO on 1 September 2025. Until then, Fredrik is serving as CFO, concentrating on cost savings and improved financial efficiency, while Erik continues to guide strategic initiatives and support the transition.

"Fredrik's priorities will include overseeing our expansion projects, strengthening our market presence, and ensuring long-term financial sustainability," Erik says. "We're entering an exciting phase where strategy and execution must go hand-in-hand."

Doubling down on growth – and revenue
Agtira's recently released Q2 2025 report revealed a major milestone: the company has doubled its revenue compared to the same period last year. This sharp increase underscores the strength of Agtira's business model and its relevance in a growing market for local, sustainably produced food.

"The market is moving toward what we've been building all along: a smarter, more sustainable food system," Erik says. "And our latest financial results show we're delivering on that promise."

Building on "närodlat" — and scaling it
In a previous feature, Agtira was recognized for redefining "locally produced" (närodlat) by building greenhouses directly on-site at major retail locations, such as ICA Maxi in Haninge. There, cucumbers travel just minutes from greenhouse to store shelf — an innovation that sparked industry-wide attention.

Now, Agtira is scaling that model.

"Our super-local production model remains a cornerstone of our identity," Erik explains. "But to meet growing demand and improve national food security, we're also investing in larger production units beyond urban centers. This dual approach enables us to combine unmatched freshness with real volume."
The acquisition of Pepino, a leading cucumber producer in southern Sweden, represents a major step in this direction, giving Agtira operational strength, logistical flexibility, and alignment with its sustainability principles.

Strength in cucumbers, with room to grow
While Agtira's new facilities are built with the flexibility to grow other crops such as tomatoes and herbs, the company emphasizes that cucumber production remains its primary focus.

"Expansion and diversification are possible down the line," says Erik. "But our main priority is to lead in cucumber production, both in quality and scale."
Rather than fully integrating Pepino into existing operations, Agtira will retain the company's base in southern Sweden, while applying its technologies and processes to enhance efficiency and sustainability.

20,000 m² of high-tech greenhouse space
Agtira is currently developing over 20,000 square meters of new greenhouse space, featuring advanced automation, smart climate control, and energy-efficient infrastructure. These greenhouses are optimized for both super-local models and centralized production — helping ensure a year-round supply.

"We're designing for flexibility," Erik says. "Our facilities can scale, adapt, and deliver consistent quality, sustainably."
Energy efficiency remains a core tenet of Agtira's operations. Through the use of residual heat, renewable energy, and closed-loop irrigation systems, the company is demonstrating what next-generation greenhouse farming can look like in the Nordic climate.

Operational excellence in focus
COO Joakim Linneros plays a central role in optimizing production and driving profitability across all sites. His leadership spans production oversight, resource efficiency, and scaling capacity, ensuring Agtira grows smarter, not just bigger.

"Operational excellence isn't just about producing more," Erik notes. "It's about producing better, sustainably, and profitably."
