Setting the agenda: sector consultation opens on the future of UK protected edibles

A national initiative to transform how fruit and vegetables are grown in the UK has entered its next phase, as the Greenhouse Innovation Consortium (GIC) opens a public consultation on the future of protected edible crop production.

The consultation follows a high-level workshop held in May 2025 at Edge Hill University, co-hosted with West Lancashire Borough Council. The event brought together growers, researchers, retailers, policymakers and technology providers to explore the challenges and opportunities facing the sector and to contribute directly to the development of a sector led white paper.

"Bringing the sector together was a major step," said a spokesperson from the GIC.

"Now we want to hear from a wider cross section of professionals across protected edible horticulture. Everyone's insight matters, whether you are in production, research, technology or policy."

The white paper, shaped by the workshop's discussions, identifies key barriers to progress, highlights opportunities for innovation and collaboration, and outlines a set of practical recommendations to support the growth and resilience of UK based production.

"This consultation aims to capture the voice of the sector in all its diversity," said a GIC representative. "While the initial draft was built from strong in person contributions, we know many others have valuable perspectives to share. This is a chance to refine and strengthen the paper before it's finalised and shared with decision makers."

The GIC sees the white paper as a strategic tool to inform policy, attract investment and guide coordinated action across the industry.

The consultation is open from 29th July until 31st October 2025, and the GIC is inviting responses from stakeholders across the horticulture value chain.

The consultation will go live next week (29th July) at the link here.
