In the village of Zhvanech, Khmelnytskyi region, Ukrainian farmer Ivan Kohut has established a unique vineyard greenhouse housing around 200 grape varieties. This innovation follows over a decade of investment into the local community, where he now cultivates more than 800 grape varieties on the scenic slopes of the Dniester River.
Originally from Lviv, Kohut has focused on both fresh grape production and small-batch winemaking. Most of his harvest is consumed fresh, but he has recently begun producing artisanal wine using select varieties.
Climate instability has become a major concern for local growers. This spring, sharp temperature fluctuations between +25°C and -5°C severely damaged many fruit and berry crops. In response, Kohut established the greenhouse as a trial to protect sensitive grape varieties from extreme weather conditions.
Beyond grapes, the farmer also experiments with less common crops for Ukraine, including pomegranates, sugarcane, edible chestnuts, and even kiwi.
