US (OH): Non-profit receives funds to improve greenhouses

We Care We Share, a Lorain nonprofit, received a $1,500 grant to improve the organization's two existing greenhouses. We Care We Share is a food bank, clothing closet and transitional housing unit for those experiencing homelessness.

We Care We Share's gardens, otherwise known as the Garden of Eatin, were built in 2019 and provide free fresh fruits and vegetables for community members.

"We Care We Share fed almost 8,000 people last year," said Michele Schraff, manager of the greenhouses. "Nearly 28% of Lorain County is in a position where they need our services."

The grant provided by the Lorain County Community Foundation will fund wood to build planter boxes, gravel, tomato cages, soil and a tool shed and work bench. Avon High School student and Boy Scout Ben Walker volunteered to help prepare the greenhouse for the season.
