Sustainability is essential, and in this field of expertise, Ahlstrom is charting a new course with their BioSpun™ PLA crop covers. "At Ahlstrom, we are committed to reducing agriculture's environmental footprint by replacing traditional fossil fuel-based plastic materials with renewable, compostable alternatives," says Mathilde Leroy, Business Development Manager for spunbond solutions at Ahlstrom Specialties.
Specializing in fiber-based specialty materials, Ahlstrom's mission to 'Purify and Protect with Every Fiber for a Sustainable World' is driving its development of more innovative solutions.
Crop protection with plant-based innovation
Agriculture has long relied on fossil fuel-based plastic covers for crop protection. However, these materials come at a steep environmental price, contributing to fossil-fuel based plastic contamination, soil degradation, and long-term ecological harm. Ahlstrom's BioSpun™ PLA spunbond nonwoven material offers a compelling alternative.
"BioSpun™ is a 100% bio-based, compostable material made from PLA, which is derived from renewable plant sources like corn or agricultural waste," Mathilde explains. "It performs just as well as conventional spunbond polypropylene, but without the fossil fuel footprint."
BioSpun™ stands out for its unique combination of durability, breathability, and biodegradability. Certified under EN13432, it is industrially compostable and designed to break down responsibly at the end of its life cycle. "We've made it possible for growers to protect their crops and the planet at the same time."
Technical excellence meets environmental responsibility
BioSpun™ delivers benefits that make it a standout material for modern agriculture. It is bio-based and compostable, making it a great alternative/replacement for fossil-fuel-based plastic. It is also breathable and permeable, which facilitates healthy air and water exchange.
Mathilde shares that it is hydrophilic, which is another benefit as it retains soil moisture to nurture root systems. "BioSpun™ is UV-Resistant and light-transmissive as it reflects light to suppress weeds while allowing optimal sun exposure, while also boasting durability yet being lightweight. It is therefore easy to handle, tear-resistant, and stable in the field."
A last but not least benefit includes that the product is recyclable and compostable, giving you flexible end-of-life options. "These features translate directly into improved crop productivity and a healthier ecosystem. And we're just getting started."
Flexible solutions for every scenario
Understanding that every agricultural environment is different, Ahlstrom has designed BioSpun™ to be highly customizable. It is available in a range of weights (12 to 150 gsm), widths (up to 15 meters), and colors, including transparent, white, and black. "We also offer non-GMO PLA options for customers with specific regulatory or market needs," Mathilde points out.
Whether for frost protection, insect control, or weed suppression, BioSpun™ is designed to adapt. "One of the things that sets BioSpun™ apart is its versatility. Growers can use it in open fields, greenhouses, and nurseries. It's truly a multi-purpose material that helps growers do more with less."
A broader vision for horticulture
While crop covers are a primary application, the potential of BioSpun™ extends across the horticultural lifecycle. From greenhouse shading and seed blankets to landscape fabric and frost protection, BioSpun™ can be tailored to meet various needs.
"We see a future where fossil-based plastics are no longer the default choice in horticulture. With BioSpun™, we're offering a sustainable alternative that doesn't compromise on performance."
As part of Ahlstrom's broader strategy, the company is actively developing new uses for spunbond PLA in partnership with growers, cooperatives, and distributors. "We believe agricultural transformation can only happen through collaboration. That's why we're inviting partners to join us in co-developing solutions, conducting field trials, and sharing knowledge," Philippe Sevoz, Vice President, Beverage & Casing Business Unit, adds.
For those interested in exploring how BioSpun™ can support their sustainability goals, Ahlstrom's team, will be available at GreenTech Amsterdam 2025. "It's a great opportunity to sit down and discuss your specific needs," Mathilde emphasizes. "We're always eager to connect with partners who share our vision of sustainable farming."
