April frosts cost Ukrainian grower half of his strawberry crop

Farmer Anatoliy Burda from the village of Mohutne in the Kirovohrad region lost half of his strawberry crop due to April frosts. This early berry in the field was planned to be sold at the beginning of May. Now he hopes for a harvest of late varieties, as reported by agronews.ua.

According to the farmer, in thirteen years of cultivation, frosts at the end of April down to minus 5 degrees occurred for the first time. "We lost 50% of the strawberries, it was covered with film and agrofibre. It suffered from frost," he said. Due to weather risks this year, the farmer planted strawberries in a greenhouse as well. He harvested the first crop at the beginning of May.

"We decided to do it because there can be frosts, hail, winds. We tried it – we really liked it. When there were frosts, we saved everything in the greenhouses. It feels great here," he said.

The farmer sells strawberries from the greenhouse at the market in Kropyvnytskyi. Currently, a kilogram costs 250 hryvnias. Last year in May, a kilogram of ground strawberries was sold for 130 hryvnias. Predicting the price of the berry further is difficult, according to the farmer. It will depend on weather conditions, harvest, and supply volumes.
