US: Finding a way to make farming more accessible for those with disabilities

Farming is a physically demanding profession, one that requires dedication and perseverance. For farmers with disabilities, those demands can become overwhelming. They must face the physical realities of farming while navigating a world that often isn't constructed for their needs.

Whether they have a physical or mental disability, these farmers may face discrimination and hostility within the agriculture industry as they pursue their passions. Through community support, adaptive technologies and innovation, many disabled farmers are again finding their purpose within their beloved industry.

Agricultural work is a dangerous profession that can cause life-altering accidents. Those affected by such accidents are left devastated and discouraged. These injuries can range anywhere from amputations to traumatic brain injuries.

"Here you are, maybe 35 or 45 years old, and suddenly you can't do something anymore," says Bill Field, AgrAbility project director. "So, our job has been to try and address the needs of individuals as they come to us."
