Gözel Seeds, Türkiye

New R&D station expected to have significant economic impact on the region

Gözel Seeds has expanded its agricultural research with the establishment of its new Research and Development station. This initiative aims to advance scientific research in vegetable seeds, enhance crop resilience, and provide innovative solutions for the agricultural sector.

Emrah Böler of Gözel Seeds explains, "The main objective of our newly inaugurated R&D station is to conduct in-depth scientific research on vegetable seeds and develop new varieties that are high-yielding and disease-resistant. Additionally, we aim to support the local agricultural sector by offering resilient and climate-adaptive solutions through new technologies and effective farming practices."

Working together with nature
Gözel Seeds wants agriculture to exist in harmony with nature. Emrah Böler states, "Our long-term vision focuses on producing seeds that are not only ecologically sustainable but also enhance human health and well-being. This station is a cornerstone of that vision, driving innovation in seed breeding and plant development. We aim to create seeds that maximize productivity, require minimal resources, and adapt to the challenges of a changing climate."

The new R&D facility will focus on several critical research areas. It will enhance the yield of crops such as eggplant, tomato, cucumber, pepper, and watermelon while developing disease- and pest-resistant varieties. Additionally, researchers will work on climate-adaptive seeds to ensure plant species can withstand drought, high temperatures, and other environmental challenges. The facility will also conduct genetic analyses to improve product quality and integrate modern scientific advancements into agriculture, while simultaneously innovating efficient agricultural methods that minimize environmental impact.

Advanced breeding methods
"By using advanced breeding methods such as double haploid technology, we can develop disease-resistant varieties in a shorter period," Serkan Yılmaz of Gözel Seeds says.

As climate change continues to challenge agricultural productivity, Gözel Seeds aims to equip growers with the tools needed to adapt. "This R&D station will advance plant breeding and technologies that align with sustainable farming principles," he notes. "Research on seeds that efficiently utilize water resources and withstand drought and other climate factors will secure the future of Türkiye's agricultural sector."

The R&D station has state-of-the-art facilities to accelerate innovation. DH laboratories are fully equipped for genetic analysis, biotechnological research, and molecular biology testing. Molecular laboratories and precision tools enable faster and more accurate seed selection to speed up the breeding process. Greenhouses and field research areas are designed for in-depth pathology testing and agricultural innovation, ensuring practical solutions for real-world challenges.

Long-term, global viability
"These technological innovations allow us to breed better seeds and improve the efficiency of agricultural practices," Serkan Yılmaz says. Gözel Seeds has ambitious long-term goals for agricultural research and development, both in Türkiye and globally. "Our goal is to establish ourselves as a key player in the global agricultural market," he explains. "We are committed to developing high-quality, disease-resistant vegetable seeds."

Beyond research, the R&D station is dedicated to supporting local growers and addressing their practical challenges. "This station is designed to empower growers by delivering tailored solutions that boost productivity and simplify pest and disease management," he mentions. "Beyond providing innovative products, we will offer hands-on training and support to optimize water and soil resource use."

A focus on our growers and the market
"We want growers to achieve greater yields with fewer inputs while maintaining soil health and sustainability," he adds.

The establishment of the R&D station is expected to have a significant economic impact on the region. "This station will catalyze regional economic development, creating diverse job opportunities for laboratory technicians, researchers, technology specialists, and other professionals," Serkan Yılmaz notes.

With a team of 20 experts already on board, the station will generate indirect economic benefits by supporting local growers and agricultural businesses. "These efforts will help our regional agricultural sector and make a lasting impact on the local economy, fostering growth and innovation," he states.

"To ensure that Türkiye remains relevant in the international vegetable market, we need to produce high-quality, climate-resilient, and high-yielding seeds that are adapted to our microclimates and market demands."
