Namibia: Youth Climate Action Fund aids Walvis Bay greenhouse project

The Nakambale Greenhouse Farming Project in Kuisebmund, Walvis Bay, has been given a new lease on life thanks to a N$60,000 grant from the Youth Climate Action Fund.

Driven by 15 dynamic young people aged 15 to 24 from a local church, the project is now a beacon of environmental stewardship and community empowerment. The Municipality of Walvis Bay recognizes the project's positive impact and supports the efforts of these young individuals.

"The Projects' goals are to bolster local food security, generate youth employment through greenhouse operations, and nurture entrepreneurial skills among aspiring farmers in the community. The initiatives also offer training programs and workshops to equip participants with essential knowledge in greenhouse management and sustainable practices," they added.

Chairperson of the Nakambale Greenhouse Project, Helena Johannes said this has been an incredible learning experience for her and her team. "We have gained valuable insights into planting techniques, fertilizers, organic mulching, water systems, and pest control. I hope to share these skills with others through the workshops we plan to offer. So far we have planted spinach, tomatoes,s, and onions and we want to sustain the garden while re-selling the produce to support the project," she emphasized.
