Tapp introduces new features that increasingly unburden customers

"Data loggers: once a necessary evil, now an increasing source of insight"

Tapp's 100% recyclable paper data loggers are on the rise within the fresh produce and floriculture sectors. The latest development is that the company has introduced an updated dashboard for its customers. "You can see this as one of the key projects to future-proof our company. Indeed, the basis of the new dashboard is that customers can customize it to their own tastes. Initially, we had built a platform that we believed would be useful, but it turned out every customer had their own requirements. With this new dashboard, we have therefore reversed our approach, allowing us to provide customization; we have truly built a platform where every functionality can be tailored to the customer's wishes," says Lucas Achterberg, who assumed the role of sales director six months ago.

"Every criterion can be made transparent in the new dashboard. So, if a customer wants to compare the performance of Logistics Partner A versus B, or air freight versus sea freight, that is all possible," Lucas says. The sales director describes it as "exciting" to join Tapp's moving train to further boost sales. "In the first phase, we were primarily occupied with the technical developments of our data loggers. These, of course, continue to evolve continuously, but we now have a solid basic product that we can introduce to the perishables market. Fresh Produce and ornamental horticulture are our largest markets in this respect, but we have also recently made our first entry into the pharmaceutical industry."

The concept was already unique by integrating sensors and chips with recyclable paper made from agricultural waste, but thanks to the latest feature, QuickTap, the data loggers can now be read without the need to download an app first. "Anyone with a smartphone, an internet connection, and an NFC chip can read the data loggers. By tapping the phone against the label, he or she immediately sees what happened during transport. In doing so, we use a traffic light system, where a green happy smiley indicates that the transport went smoothly, a yellow smiley indicates a slight overrun and a red sad smiley indicates that there were serious problems during transport. Anyone, anywhere in the world, can see this at a glance, and the data does not have to be sent back separately, as it is automatically uploaded to the customer's dashboard," Lucas explains.

"The foundation of our paper data loggers still consists of two products, namely the temperature logger and the humidity logger, which measures relative humidity in addition to temperature. All data from the loggers is transmitted to the cloud from the smartphone, making the data visible in the dashboard. Here, users can already add reference codes when activating, such as the flight number," Lucas says. "The great thing is that many customers now realize they can do much more with this data. Often, data loggers were seen as a necessary evil that only became important when there were problems, but now customers understand that the data makes the entire chain much more transparent. It's not just about right or wrong; users want to know what happened to their product during transport."

In Lucas' experience, the more premium the product, the more crucial the data loggers are. "A blueberry is simply less robust than a potato or an onion. That makes the cost price of a shipment or container significantly higher. In the soft fruit sector, data loggers are therefore more top of mind," Lucas says.

The latest update that Tapp will roll out in the coming weeks also includes a BMS (Battery Management System) and a Partnership Plan. "Until now, the battery status was always indicated as good or empty, but after the latest update, users can see exactly how long the battery life of the loggers is. That provides a lot of insight. Our Partnership Plan completely relieves customers in the management of data loggers. We deliver fresh loggers with the latest software and batteries at agreed times, tailored to their needs. This way, customers always stay supplied, without worries. We call it: Sensing as a Service. The plan offers flexibility and helps customers manage seasonal peaks.
