The neighbor's greenhouse proverbially only comes up for sale once, so when Dutch growe Arjen Bevelander got the chance to take over the adjacent greenhouse of Tuinderij van Vugt in Achthuizen, he didn't have to think long. From 1 January this year, he took over the 5-hectare greenhouse farm, allowing him to grow more herbs indoors.

A new line of business for the herb company that, for the time being, mainly grew herbs outdoors. Tuinderij Bevelander had been growing various herbs on Goeree-Overflakkee for years. To grow with market demand, trials are regularly carried out with new species and varieties of herbs.
"The changing weather conditions have caused us to grow less outdoors and more under glass. In recent years, spring has been increasingly darker, colder, and wetter. Then it helps if you can continue indoors. We will have access to a heated greenhouse. We don't plan to heat it excessively more, but of course, it helps," explains the grower, who is a member of Bakker Barendrecht.

"We are therefore going to grow less outdoors in the coming years and especially the seed products we are going to grow indoors for risk-spreading reasons. In the new greenhouse, we will grow pak choi as well as herbs," says Arjen. "This is also the reason we are clearing out a lot of equipment. This is why we are offering a lot of equipment, such as harvesting and planting machines for the outdoor cultivation of lettuce and leafy crops, and many other soil-grown horticultural products through Troostwijk Auctions."
