Morocco is boosting the implementation of the National Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation Program (PNAEPI) 2020-2027 and the Generation Green 2020-2030 strategy. At the "Water and Food Security: Resilience and Sustainability" conference held in Casablanca last week, the Minister of Agriculture and Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, and Water and Forests, Mohamed Sadiki, highlighted the importance of agriculture as the central axis of the country's development.
The PNAEPI contemplates an investment of 165,000 million dirhams, complemented by the 50,000 million dirhams allocated to the Green Generation strategy. These funds are aimed at strengthening the agricultural sector and improving water management. At the end of 2023, Morocco managed to equip 824,000 hectares with localized irrigation, i.e. 50% of the irrigated area. The goal is to expand this figure to one million hectares by 2030.
The Moroccan Minister of Agriculture also highlighted other measures to ensure the country's water supply, such as the construction of new dams, the interconnection of water basins covering the regions of Sebou-Bouregreg-Oum Rbia-Tensift and Loukkos-Tangérois, and promoting desalination.
