Philippines: Dept of Agriculture, Migrant Workers collaborate on programs for Overseas Filipino Workers

The Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) will collaborate on programs aimed at expanding economic opportunities for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and their families through various agricultural initiatives.

On June 5, 2024, Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel, Jr. signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Migrant Workers Interim Secretary Atty. Hans Leo J. Cacdac. The partnership aligns with the celebration of Migrant Worker week.

"This MOU represents our commitment to further support our Overseas Filipino Workers by providing them with access to opportunities and support programs in the field of agriculture and agriculture enterprises," Sec. Tiu Laurel said.

Under the agreement, the DA will offer technical assistance, agri-loans, agribusiness training, market linkage, and information materials.

"We strive to honor the sacrifices and hard works of our OFWs by providing them with viable job opportunities in the country. Ultimately, we hope to see our OFWs prosper in Philippine agriculture and agribusiness," Sec. Tiu Laurel said.

Meanwhile, Secretary Cacdac welcomed the collaboration between the two agencies, hoping that it will empower more returning OFWs.

"Gusto namin bilang tahanan ng OFWs, maging kami ang katuwang sa kanilang hinaing, at kanilang mga pangarap. Dito sa tahanan ng OFW, pwede po kayo magpunla ng inyong pangarap at siya po nating pagbubunyin ang binhi at bunga ng inyong mga pangarap," Sec. Cacdac said.

"We want to empower with information and skills, so that they can find income that they need that is safer and stable," he added.

The signing ceremony was attended by officials from both DA and DMW, as well as OFW returnees, family members, and leaders from the National Capital Region.
