Cherry and specialty tomato from the Netherlands are a positive exception

European tomato prices disappoint in April

The tomato dashboard monitored by the European Commission is flashing red for April 2024. Compared to the past five years, last month's prices have plummeted more sharply. Across the board, the price is at 1.51 euros per kilo, below the average of 1.69 euros per kilo.

The only 'green' figure on the dashboard is that of cherry and specialty tomatoes from the Netherlands. For these, an average of 3.02 euros per kilo was paid in April. This places the price 47% above the five-year average. Compared to April 2023, the difference is not very significant. Then the average price was also nearly 3 euros per kilo.

The most significant deviations from the five-year average prices are observed in Spain. Here, the price for loose, round tomatoes is just 60 euro cents per kilo in April (44% lower than the five-year average), and 54.8 euro cents per kilo for vine tomatoes (49% lower).
