The absence of Polish cucumber imports offers market opportunities for Ukrainian producers

A greenhouse in Stanishivka, which is located in the Zhytomyr region, reported a successful start to the cucumber season. Over 30 tons of produce are expected this season.

The facility showcased how it cultivates greenhouse cucumbers and shared insights into its distribution channels.

The director of the vegetable farm, Vasyl Tymoshchuk, explained their approach to cucumber cultivation, which includes the use of mineral wool instead of soil. He emphasized the natural composition of their substrate, which is made from basalt. Tymoshchuk mentioned their long-standing cultivation of Dutch cucumber varieties, attesting to their quality.

Tymoshchuk states that the enterprise exported its produce to European countries until February 2022. However, due to changes in market dynamics, they now primarily cater to domestic demand.

Oleg Pendzin, Executive Director of the Economic Discussion Club, highlighted the shift in market opportunities for local producers, particularly with the absence of Polish imports this year. He cautioned that while this presents a window for higher prices, it may be temporary until mid-June when imports are expected.

Regarding pest control, agronomist Yulia Liyeva underscored their reliance on biocontrol methods, using beneficial insects to maintain a natural balance in the greenhouse environment.
