US (PA): Hoyt’s Greenhouse to help bio students grow

The expansion of Hoyt Science Center, a three-story 27,000 square foot addition, has been open for almost three years. However, another addition has remained overshadowed and hasn't received the same amount of attention—the greenhouse. Funded by a private donor, construction for this small glass and metal structure encountered delays.

"Its construction was slated for the end of the third phase of Hoyt—the phase that led to the new wing for chemistry labs and classrooms," said Academic Dean Jamie McMinn. "This decision was prudent as we aimed to prevent any damage to the new greenhouse during construction, and supply chain issues caused delays in receiving the necessary materials to build the physical greenhouse structure."

When walking past the greenhouse, you may not notice the equipment to regulate operations. Physical plant staff will operate it. This gear makes sure temperatures, humidity, etc., are accurately controlled.

Roughly three months have passed since the greenhouse details were finalized, and they are now ready for action. The biology department will primarily utilize it. Dr. Marian M. Furimsky, Associate Professor and Chair of the department, describes the greenhouse as a crucial resource for the School of Life and Health Sciences.
