UK food industry leaders demand government action on foreign workers

In a meeting at Downing Street, food industry executives emphasized the urgent need for an increase in foreign workers to address the rising food prices impacting consumers across the UK. This conversation highlighted the sector's dependency on international labor to maintain the stability and affordability of the UK's food supply chain.

Ian Wright, the former Chief Executive of the Food and Drink Federation, expressed his concerns: "The trajectory we're on with food prices is unsustainable for consumers and detrimental to the broader economy. To address this, it's crucial we recognize the indispensable role that foreign workers play in our sector. This isn't just a short-term fix but a long-standing necessity."

The dialogue revealed the industry's warning that without prompt government intervention to allow more foreign labor into the UK, the country risks a prolonged reliance on overseas staff, challenging current immigration and labor market policies.
