Labor migration of Central Asian workers to greenhouse jobs in the UK

Citizens from Central Asia have become a significant portion of seasonal workers in the United Kingdom, comprising a quarter of migrants in 2023. Experts point to an increase in this trend, partially linked to the tightening of rules in Russia for migrants after the invasion of Ukraine. Workers from Kyrgyzstan describe differences in working conditions between the UK and Russia, noting the shorter work week and the higher value placed on their work in Britain.

The majority of workers from Kyrgyzstan are employed in greenhouses, picking berries and fruits. These tasks include pruning, cleaning, and covering plants, as well as harvesting crops. Wages are typically based on the amount of produce gathered, incentivizing efficiency. It is important to note that seasonal greenhouse work requires physical endurance and diligence.

British companies actively recruit Kyrgyz workers for agricultural jobs, offering them employment opportunities in greenhouses. The increase in the number of people willing to work abroad and the number of companies providing employment services is linked to both the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions and geopolitical events redirecting migration flows from Central Asia.
