French shipping company CMA CGM suspends Red Sea transit again due to security concerns

French maritime transport company CMA CGM has once again suspended the use of the Red Sea as a transit route for its vessels, according to a source. This decision was made in response to the ongoing threats posed by Iran-backed Yemeni rebels, known as the Huthi rebels, who have been targeting ships in the area for months. The rebels claim their actions are aimed at Israel and Israeli-linked vessels in an attempt to halt the offensive in the Gaza Strip.

These attacks have led many shipping companies, including CMA CGM, to avoid the Red Sea, a crucial route that typically handles about 12% of global maritime trade. However, the alternative route around southern Africa adds significant cost and time, causing many shippers to resume using the Red Sea. This trend was disrupted again in January due to a new wave of attacks.

American forces intervened by shooting down a drone and destroying an explosives-laden uncrewed surface vessel that was threatening ships in the Red Sea.
